Keyword research is important in SEO.
This will help us understand the audience’s intent and needs and improve the website’s engagement, traffic, ranking, and growth.
By doing keyword research, you can identify what people are searching for and, based on that, write well-structured content to help them.
With this, you can gain more traffic and become trustworthy in your niche.
Also, Keyword research helps with paid advertising campaigns; it will bring you better reach and ROI(Return On Investment).
So, it is the first step for your online visibility of your website, ranking and your digital marketing strategy.
How to do Keyword Research? Step-by-step Guide
Let’s do keyword research for your website or blog with simple steps.
Imagine, that you’re going to launch a blogging website like ‘Damzone’.
Step 1: Identify the Niche and Goal
Identify the niche or domain in which you’re going to start your blogging website. Let’s say your niche is ‘Digital Marketing’.
Now, try to understand your audience and what information they are searching for. Identifying this will help you find the keywords.
Step 2: Identify the Pillar Keywords of Niche
Identify the primary keyword people are searching for in your niche, which should be your website’s pillar keyword.
For example, if your niche is Digital Marketing, you could use the keywords ‘Digital Marketing Tutorial’ or ‘Digital Marketing Guides.’
Step 3: Use Keyword Research Tools
You can find keywords related to keywords using Google Suggestions, keyword research tools, and related searches.
Let’s start with
Google Suggestion keywords:
For instance, I typed ‘Digital Marketing Strategies’ in the Google search box. See the picture below,
It shows me related keywords that people are searching for.
If you want to know the in-depth details of this keyword, use keyword research tools to understand it.
Keyword Research Tools: Free & Paid:
- Google Keyword Planner (Free)
- Ubersuggest (Limited in free)
- Semrush, Ahrefs, and Moz (Paid)
Semrush offers free sign-up as well, but it has very limited data.
Let’s see how to do keyword research with Semrush!
Enter your primary keyword in the ‘Semrush Keyword Magic Tool.’
For instance, I entered ‘Digital Marketing’ as a primary keyword and click enter.
Now, you have the keywords related to your primary keyword. It gives me 355 keywords for my seed keyword (Primary keyword).
Always use broad matches to get a perfect match and filters to get the right keywords based on your needs.
You can view each keyword’s intent, volume, KD%(Keyword Difficulty), and CPC(Cost-Per-Click).
This helps to pick the right keyword for your content strategy.
Related Search Keywords:
In the Google Search box, I type ‘Keyword Research Process’ and scroll down to the end of the page.
You can find the related topics that people are searching for.
This is another way of finding the related keywords, which will help you in the keyword research process and strategies for your keywords.
These are the three simple methods to find the keywords.
Step 4: Understand User Intent
Understand your audience, whether they need informational, Commercial, Transactional, or Navigational content.
By knowing this, you can strategize your keywords accordingly. If you aren’t clear about user intent, I will explain it in the upcoming topic.
In Semrush, you can find the keywords for user intent easily.
Use the right tool to identify the user intent.
Step 5: Understand Keyword Metrics
You want to understand keyword metrics like search volume, Keyword difficulty, and CPC.
To identify this metric, you want to use keyword research tools. I’m a Semrush user, so let me show you how to use keyword metrics.
Search Volume:
Identify the keyword with decent volume; this may bring you organic traffic. Don’t select the competitive keyword; it won’t be easy to rank for the new website.
Search volume tells us how many users search for this keyword in Google.
Keyword Difficulty (KD%):
Know the difficulty of each keyword and take the keyword with less competition and a decent search volume.
Suggestion: New website, use very easy keywords; competitive keywords won’t work out for your website.
CPC (Cost-Per-Click):
This will give the keywords commercial value. If the keyword CPC is higher, then it has a high potential for monetization.
These are the metrics you should know about the keywords.
Step 6: Long-tail keywords
Loneg-tail keywords are a must for implementing in your blog because most people search for long-tail keywords.
Long-tail keywords are three or more words in a sentence.
For example: ‘What is Off-Page SEO.’
Longtail keywords are less competitive and have a chance to rank. Mostly, long-tail keywords are question-based ones.
Try to add it to your content.
Step 7: Analyze Your Competitor’s Keywords
Analyze your competitors’ keywords that are ranking well in your niche. Use tools like Semrush or Ahrefs to do this.
For instance, I will use Semrush.
In the Semrush Domain Overview, enter your competitor’s domain.
Now, scroll down to the overview section, and you will find your competitor’s organic keywords.
Click ‘View Details’ to know more.
Here, you can find every ranking organic keyword of your competitor.
Pick keywords from it and fill the gap of your keywords in your content. This will help you produce better content for your website.
Step 8: Monitor the keywords
Track the rankings of your keywords. Use Google Search Console to see which keywords are getting more clicks.
Use tools like Sermush to track the position of your keywords in Search Engine Result pages (SERPs).
By tracking and knowing the metrics, you can adjust your content based on it and keep it fresh.
This will increase the visibility and can rank better in SERPs.

Search Intent is a term used to understand people’s search behavior. There are four types of intent, they are;

- Navigational
Informational Intent:
A person wants to know about a particular topic or questions. The questions include why, when, what, which, and who. A user needs an immediate and proper answer to the questions.
For example: ‘What is a good SEO score?’
Commercial Intent:
Commercial intent means a user wants to purchase the product but also wants to review, compare, and learn more about it.
For example: ‘Best AI tools for lead generation’ and ‘Semrush Review.’
Transactional Intent:
Transactional intent means a user needs to buy a product or wants to complete an action immediately.
For example: ‘Sign up for Semrush’ or ‘Buy T-shirts.’
Navigational intent means a user needs to find a specific web page or website they already know. This search is for a branded search.
For example: ‘Twitter login’ or ‘Flipkart’
These are the four intents that you want to know when you’re doing keyword research.
What are the Types Of Keywords?
There are two types of Keywords,
- Long-tail keywords – Three or more words (Eg: What is AI in marketing)
- Short-tail keywords – one or two words (Eg: SEO statistics)
Keyword Research Statistics
- 50% of the search queries are long-tail keywords (four words or more)
- 70% of the traffic comes from long-tail keywords, which people mostly search for.
